We travel back to 1968 in this edition of #tbt, to the iconic Hess’s department store in downtown Allentown.
The models certainly were one of the drawing cards for Hess’s, as were appearances by famous actors and artists, and so much more. And of course, there was the famed strawberry pie! Hess’s faded from the local scene in the mid-1990s, but fond memories live on for many.
The models’ dresses depict “HHH,” for Vice President Hubert Horatio Humphrey, “McCarthy” for Sen. Eugene McCarthy and “Nixon” for Richard M. Nixon. McCarthy unsuccessfully sought the Democratic Party’s nomination for president. Humphrey, a Democrat, later lost to Nixon, a Republican who had served as vice president under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Sadly, 1968 is also remembered for its tumultuous and tragic side as both Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated that year and the war in Vietnam continued to rage amid protests in the U.S. (photo courtesy of Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum)
