This isn’t Coney Island and you won’t find famed hot dog eating champion Joey Chestnut in this shot, but we’ve got a hot dog eating contest for this edition of Throwback Thursday #tbt.

This particular contest is a far cry from the current version we see on television. No cups of water to chase down hot dogs and hot dog rolls. Just kids having fun in simpler times in Nay Aug Park, the largest park in Scranton.

Check out the man with the megaphone. He’s either starting the contest or giving bite-by-bite commentary.

This shot by photographer John Horgan was shared by the Lackawanna Historical Society. It’s believed the picture is circa 1915. Horgan was employed by the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad and took hundreds of railroad and coal mine photos in the Lackawanna Valley in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Nay Aug is one cool place. It sports a swimming pool, a tree house, waterfalls, lots of green space, and more. In the Delaware Indian language, Nay Aug means “Place of the Noisy Waters.”
