My Camelbeach claim to fame is beating my daughter to the bottom of the Checkered Flag Challenge water slide.

Don’t ask about FlowRider. That didn’t go well for me, but I’m sure those standing in line waiting their turn were pretty amused. That was several years ago, but they probably still talk about it. The conversation probably starts out something like, “Remember that guy who made us laugh until our sides hurt?”

Bottom line, though, is that Camelbeach is a place where you can catch a wave in the mountains and otherwise get your fill of water fun. Plus, the water’s always warm — between 78 and 81 degrees.

With more than 37 rides and attractions, Camelbeach bills itself as the largest water park in the state. It’s just off Interstate 80, which makes it convenient from just about anywhere. There is a lot of great food to buy inside the park or you can rent a table in the picnic area.

More information is available at

Don’t forget the sunscreen and flip-flops or water shoes. And be sure to get enough sleep the night before. With so many fun things to do, it can be exhausting. Plus, they won’t be talking years later about your feeble attempt at surfing on FlowRider. Enjoy.
