The Girl Scouts’ mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. That mission was reinforced on Feb. 13 at PPL’s Walbert Learning Center, when 43 girls ages 5-17 took part in a training program led by volunteers from PPL’s The POWER Network business resource group.
The four-hour training in Allentown, Pa. was in preparation for the Girl Scouts’ upcoming Take the Lead event, “honoring some of the area’s most distinguished women whose leadership and achievements have made the world a better place.” The Girl Scouts take charge of the April 26 awards celebration, serving as emcees, presenters and hosts.
The POWER Network members helped the girls develop skills in networking, interviewing, public presentations, social media use and formal dining etiquette.
“The mission of the Girl Scouts and PPL’s POWER Network are in full alignment, and we are proud to support these wonderful young girls for a half-day of training,” said Sue Drabic, senior talent management consultant at PPL. “I am amazed at their self-confidence and poise. Who knows? Any of these girls could be future PPL employees.”
PPL is a sponsor of the Take the Lead event, which raises funds to help support initiatives and other innovative program opportunities for more than 5,200 girls in the region. PPL retirees Lucinda and Dan McCarthy are event co-chairs.
“The training is a wonderful complement to the girls’ other experiences in scouting because it helps build their courage and confidence to participate in this formal business setting,” said Carla Hickey, senior director of community partnerships and giving for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. “Plus they get the wonderful opportunity to meet professional women from a variety of careers.
“We deeply appreciate The POWER Network members’ donation of their time and talent as well as PPL’s support to our girls.”
