Every community support and outreach program needs an organizer or coordinator who lays out ground rules, makes contacts, and provides a setting for people to give their best.

Michelle Gerrity-Druther, a PPL employee for about 30 years, has served in that role in several settings.

She conducts an annual Thanksgiving food drive in her workplace to help Scranton’s St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen serve hot meals to those in need. Also, seeing news of the devastation left in Haiti by Hurricane Matthew inspired her to reach out to fellow employees and start a clothing drive.

“It’s not just one person that does something, of course.  It’s a group effort,” says Michelle, a facility records specialist based in Scranton. “People see the need, and they sometimes just need someone to lay out an outline for them and bring it all together.  That’s an easy thing to do.  But the generosity of PPL employees is what really brings it all together.”

Michelle is also generous in her community involvement in existing campaigns and settings.

In the spring of 2016, she served as Scranton-area coordinator for PPL’s Cover to Cover program, which collected and donated more than 25,000 new and gently used books. She has also volunteered as part of the United Way’s Success by 6 program, visiting preschool Headstart classes and reading to children.

“I participated in this program to encourage small children to desire to read, which is the foundation of their education leading to their success,” she says.

Michelle has also collected donations for women and children at the Women’s Resource Center in Scranton, which helps victims of domestic assault; volunteers at fundraising events for St. Joseph’s Center to support the physically and mentally challenged; and leads a bereavement group at her church to support others who have lost loved ones.

“The rewards of service are immeasurable,” Michelle says. “Having been blessed myself, it is only fitting to give back to those in need. “
