VIDEO: Hang up on phone scams
We’d like to educate customers on the signs of phone scams, so that not a single person in our service area falls victim to these swindles.
We’ve created a video to help you recognize the most common signs of scams, and also tell you more about how we handle it if a customer is at risk of losing service. (For one thing, they don’t get phone calls threatening immediate shutoff. That’s a sure sign of a scam.)
Take a look, and share with anyone you know who may find the info useful. Together we can shut down scammers.
Just received a message on my phone from Mrs. Morris wanting to discuss supply charges on my electric cost benefit account. Phone number is 215-278-8092 and reference number 0100514. I had no idea what she was talking about and she never left a company name. I did not call back.
I received the exact message and same reference number.
I received the same call yesterday with an 814 call back #. Scam, deleted message.
I received exact same call and numbers. My question is “how did they know my contract was expiring and how did they get my phone number?
We got the same message on our church office telephone, I spoke to her and told her the person who pays the bills was not in the building, she said thank you and hung up.
Thank you for your customer service educational piece on phone scamming. I believe most of us have accepted this as a way of life. “Do Not Call” efforts, reporting to the phone company and local law enforcement requires a multi-faceted approach, which is counter to the already pressing issues of safety efforts. The numbers and types of scams on what occurs as almost daily, combines not only those seeking to defraud through deceit via PP&L, but also many other avenues in a way to scam the consumer. Again, thank you.
You’re welcome, Michael. We share information with law enforcement in hopes of bringing scammers to justice. But until that happens, we try to keep customers well-informed about fraud.
I use my caller ID and if I don’t recognize the number, I don’t answer. If the call is important, they will leave a message and then it’s up to me to decide if I want to return the call or block it.
I am on the state Do Not Call list and the federal Do Not Call list. I still get lots of calls. If I don’t know the number or area of the country, I usually don’t answer. If it’s important, they will leave a message on the answering machine. Some i answer if the number has called numerous times but I hang up as soon as I hear a recording or “Josh” calling. I was told as soon as he says “Can you hear me all right?” the scammers have your phone number and use it to call others.
If you should answer the call without thinking first, never say “yes” to any trick question they ask. Like “is this Vito?” Just say no, or simply hang up!
I too use my caller ID. Too bad that everyone don’t have that advantage. Older people wouldn’t be taken so often.
I also received a call from Mrs Morris. Caller ID showed the call came from 855 798-4059. Call back number was 724 8354093. Reference # was 0100514. Call came in on 4/19 at 1:19 PM. I did not call back
I got the same message on the same day as Bill Curtis, with the same call back number. I immediately erased it. I am glad I read this e-mail from PPL.
Thanks PPL for keeping our information safe.
I received a call 11/23/18. A lady says if I pay my PP&L bill on time in the last 6months, I would be eligible for a15% discount, I just have a few question to ask, I told her to put it in writing that this call may not be legit-hang up was immediate by caller. I called PP&L. They told me no such call was made to my residence by PP&L
Just received an automated phone call with caller ID PP&L Electric. I answered thinking there might be a legitimate reason they were contacting me, but I should have noted the clue that it was a scam – PP&L changed its name to PPL a very long time ago. The message said we are eligible for a 15% discount due to on-time payments for past three months. I hung up. It was just too good to be true.
