If there’s such a thing as recycling heaven, we got a glimpse of it on Saturday (10/13) in Lancaster.

Our energy-saving hats are off to the hundreds of people who brought their old room air conditioners and dehumidifiers to our recycling roundup at the Home Depot on Fruitville Pike. We collected more than 450 units! To put that in perspective, the energy savings from recycling these appliances could power 17 homes for an entire year.

There were people lined up with their old appliances 45 minutes before our event began.

The old appliances will be recycled and their materials (metal, plastic, etc.) will ultimately be used in other products. It also keeps them out of landfills, so the benefits are many.

PPL’s appliance recycling program normally doesn’t take room air conditioners or dehumidifiers by themselves. They usually have to be picked up along with an old refrigerator or freezer. That’s why we offered this roundup, to make it easier for customers to get rid of these inefficient appliances.

Another benefit to the recycling event was feeding the hungry. Those who brought two canned goods to the event received a free pack of energy-efficient LED light bulbs. Girl Scouts in Troops 70569, 70105, 70136, and 70173 from the Friendly Valley Service Unit, Heart of PA Council took the canned goods to the Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services food bank which serves the local community.

Keep your eyes open for the next recycling event. We’ll be making our way through the PPL service territory in central and eastern Pennsylvania.  In the meantime, you can contact PPL at 1-877-486-9204 to dispose of your old appliances or visit pplelectric.com/recycle.
