If you offer it — the chance to get rid of old, inefficient room air conditioners and dehumidifiers — they will come.
Our recent recycling event in Dickson City, Luzerne County on May 11 proved that beyond a doubt. And we couldn’t be more pleased. Lines formed an hour before we started the recycling event in the parking lot of the Home Depot. When it was all over, we had collected more than 1,000 appliances, more than double the number collected at our last event last fall in the Lancaster area. Customers received $10 for each room air conditioner or dehumidifier they dropped off.
Those who brought appliances also brought canned goods for the Dalton Food Pantry which serves the local community. Cub Scout Pack 251 from Clarks Green assisted with collecting the food. Those who brought two canned goods to the event received a free pack of LED bulbs.
PPL’s appliance recycling program normally doesn’t take room air conditioners or dehumidifiers by themselves. Those smaller appliances must be coupled with an old refrigerator or freezer. Roundups like the one in Dickson City give customers an outlet for getting rid of these smaller appliances.
PPL is already scouting its service area in central and eastern Pennsylvania to hold the next air conditioner/dehumidifier recycling event. And we hope to collect even more energy hogging appliances the next time!
