When you’re a business that has more than 700,000 square feet of sports activity space under one roof and over 50 acres of outdoor facilities, you understandably have a LOT of lighting.

And while Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim, Pennsylvania, near Lancaster is a big place, it has taken great strides to shrink its electric bill by performing lighting upgrades that qualified for incentives in two of PPL Electric Utilities’ energy efficiency programs, including our Direct Discount program. Spooky Nook teamed up with A1 Energy, Manheim, on the lighting work.

The PPL Direct Discount Program provides rebates for things such as lighting, compressed air and refrigeration to help qualifying businesses offset project costs. Best of all, there’s no paperwork, just quick and long-term savings. Under Direct Discount, improvements must be installed by an approved contractor.

Besides saving money, another Direct Discount perk is time saved. There’s no application because the contractor handles the paperwork.

Spooky Nook’s upgrades involved more than 3,500 lights and not only provided more efficient, superior lighting, but also reduced the facility’s annual kilowatt hour usage by nearly 2 million kWh, enough energy to power 197 homes for year. That translates into annual savings of about $135,000. Lights were replaced in offices, conference rooms and locker rooms, but also in sports and dome areas.

In addition to saving energy going forward, Spooky Nook received nearly $240,000 in rebates and incentives.

“If it wasn’t for PPL, A1 Energy and the rebates, we wouldn’t have been able to approve this project for a number of years,” said Spooky Nook owner Sam Beiler.
