As temperatures drop , many people turn to space heaters for additional warmth in their homes, offices, and businesses. While these devices can provide added comfort, they must be used with caution. Be sure you follow proper safety guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure your space heater keeps you cozy without compromising safety.
Before You Buy
When selecting a space heater, keep these important factors in mind:
- Purchase only newer models that come equipped with current safety features, including automatic shut-off and tip-over protection switches.
- Look for the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label, which indicates the heater meets essential safety standards.
Safe Operation Guidelines
To ensure safe operation of your space heater, follow these essential practices:
- Before first use, carefully read all instructions and warning labels that come with your heater.
- Inspect your heater before each use, checking specifically for cracked or broken plugs, loose connections, or frayed/damaged cords – if you notice any damage, discontinue use immediately.
- Position the heater on a level surface away from foot traffic, keeping it clear of furniture, curtains, and other flammable objects.
- Maintain vigilant supervision, especially around children and pets, who should always be kept at a safe distance from the heater.
- Never leave a space heater unattended – always turn it off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
Electrical Safety Essentials
Proper electrical connection is crucial for space heater safety:
- Always plug space heaters directly into wall outlets – avoid using extension cords or power strips.
- If you must use an extension cord (though not recommended), strictly follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use only heavy-duty cords rated for the power requirements of your heater.
- Never run heater cords under carpets or rugs, as this can create a fire hazard.
Remember, while space heaters can provide welcome warmth during cold weather, they require careful attention and proper usage to maintain safety. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the comfort of your space heater while keeping your home and loved ones safe.

Make sure your outlet can handle. Many outlets are wired with the fast plug in backs not around screws which I have seen to get compromised (both insulation are to code) outlet after years of use the bimetal weakens and cause a bad connection. One cold winter I had 6 customers with this problem
I have down trees in my backyard from both of my neighbors they’re both elderly people who can they call to help assist them with removing these trees from my backyard which is putting weight on my septic tank and my propane tank please assistant them
Good afternoon Uneeda, We appreciate you reaching out with your concern. We conduct routine tree trimming to remove trees & branches that are affecting wires that run from pole to pole, but not those running from the pole to your home. Please call us to report the tree on the wire at 1-800-342-5775 (say trees on wire during the prompts.) If you have our 10-digit pole number available for the closest pole that would help our team. Thanks.
How soon can I expect a check for three minths of overcharges?
RE: Electric Heater fire prevention. You missed one of the easiest and most important things to check: the temperature of the heater’s a-c plug. It should not feel warm, let alone hot! If the plug is warmer than room temperature, I want to know why! Trouble is brewing that could lead to a fire!
I am a widow in my eighties. I live alone. I know my house needs “work” and I know it would cost a lot to have it fixed. I had applied to SEDA-COG, completed a form that was sent to me. I called later to ask if I am still on the list – was told I was, but would have to wait till I would be called. I don’t have time to wait – I am too old to wait. So, what do I do?
Good afternoon Nancy, SEDA-COG is a government program, not a PPL program. You may want to email the Weatherization Program Assistant with the status of your inquiry found under their link https://seda-cog.org/about/ourteam. Best of luck.
Is a heater with copper coils more efficient than the other type with just regular coils, or what is considered a ceramic heater and what are the advantages of one like that?
