Flooding can happen in any season, often with little warning. And while every situation is different, one thing always remains the same: water and electricity are a dangerous combination. If an area is flooded or even just damp, assume electrical hazards may be present. Outlets, cords and appliances can energize standing water, so never enter a flooded space until a professional confirms it’s safe.
Basements are especially risky because electrical equipment sits low to the ground. If yours has taken on water, stay out as hazards beneath the water line may not be visible. The same goes for your breaker box. Never stand in water to reach it. If floodwater is anywhere near your electrical panel, call us at 1-800-342-5775 and we’ll shut off power at the meter.
During and after flooding, avoid touching switches, wiring or appliances when you’re wet or standing in water. Even a small amount of moisture increases shock risk. And remember that dangers don’t disappear once the water recedes. Always have a licensed electrician inspect your home and tell you when it’s safe to restore power. If appliances or electronics were exposed to water, don’t try to use them, a professional can determine if they can be repaired or need replacement.
Flooding, and other weather conditions, can also bring down trees and power lines. If you see a downed wire, especially around standing water, stay far back and report it immediately by calling 1-800-342-5775 and saying “downed power line.”
If you live in a flood‑prone area, a little preparation can help. If the area is still dry, you can turn off power at the breaker and move electrical equipment to higher ground. Once water is present, leave everything in place and call a professional. Many homeowners in flood prone areas also keep simple supplies like sandbags and plastic sheeting on hand to help reduce damage.
